Fun and fitness
Play is necessary for the parrots, to maintain mental health. In the wild parrots use up to 90% of the time to look for food. In captivity, where they have all served, they have suddenly a lot of extra energy credit, and it is important that they get an outlet for this in an acceptable manner. There are many kinds of toys on the market. Much can also make even with modest means. The games should appeal to the parrot's natural behavioral patterns, and invite to imitate activities that would be devoted to the outdoors. The parrot should have access to several different games at once to be able to make independent decisions, and the games should be changed and rotated regularly. The toys should be any restriction as to various activities such as chewing (eg. Wood, cardboard, paper and leather), and manipulation of objects (a la abacus, puzzles adapted parrots, etc.)
The toys should be safe!
It is important that toys are safe for the bird. Many parrots have today is a too high zinc content in the blood, due to the unfortunate choice of cage-bars, play suspension, etc. Therefore, we should use zinc-and lead-free materials such as stainless steel, the chains, food bowls, quick-links etc. Acrylic (REAL acrylic that is!) is also toxic.
We must also use safe ingredients with respect to staining of wood and learn to play. Food coloring without flavoring (to avoid ingestion of small pieces) gives good results and is not toxic to the bird. With regard to leather and leather should be taken that it is naturally tanned, so the parrot does not ingest toxins from the tanning process.
Avoid split rings ("key rings") that the parrot can get stuck in. Replace any such with quick links to safe materials. Avoid long cords and wires that can fray and who the bird can get caught in. Cut off the parts that are frayed over time, making sure the ropes are thick NOK to get a certain weight. Ropes should also be pending natural rope, or colored with non-toxic colors. Avoid the chains with open joints, replace these with welded chain in a safe material. Even joints that are pressed together well can be scary, so make sure they are properly welded. When it comes to clocks / bells, then there are parts that the parrot can get stuck in, ie "open" part, and the clock must be of safe materials. So-called "jingle bells" are often found in bird toys, but it pinched the opening of these are not suitable for heavy-footed. It is important to see all bird toys you buy ready, too many have poor solutions. Most can easily fix, by replacing a part or two.
Chew Toys
Many owners are frustrated by the fact that the parrot destroys the new toy after a short time. Lekemassakrer is a healthy sign! Wild parrots must be able to chew a lot to create an account, so the bird should always have access to only chew toys. Chew Toys you can make yourself to save money, and you can use everything from wood (safe wood!) To learn and unbleached cardboard. Not all parrots are just as eager to chew, but at times can also chew these extra lot. Preferably in connection with the breeding periods. Always have plenty of chew toys available only for such periods. Chew toys can be bought both as context only and fotleker.
Fresh branches from safe trees are simple, cheap and popular, both as its branches and chew toys. With me, they stand over night before they are put into the cage, since the dreaded bird flu virus only survives a few hours outside the host.
Durable toys:
Many parrots are fond of bright colors and toys, plastic and acrylic fills generally this need. There are lots of these toys on the market, and you can also find a section that is intended for young children in toy stores (rattles, etc.). Would you use a feather, you must make sure that the toy is sturdy NOK to endure a hard parrot beak. Also durable toys available in the trade as both hinge only and fotleker.
