For a long time it was thought that Rainbow Lorikeets mainly feed on nectar when living in the wild. However recently studies have surprised scientists showing that pollen is most likely the main food source for rainbow lorikeets. So, don't forget to add pollen to the mix if you create your own rainbow lorikeet mix. Honey and water nectar is nice but simply not enough in the long run. Lorikeets also regularly eat insects and insect larvae found on trees and flowers. If you have an outdoor aviary they will get their treats but if you keep them inside alltogether you may want to think about offering some small larvae and test what your lorikeets like. They need pollen and insects for protein and fats, and your lorikeets get their carbohydrates from the sugars in nectar. I like to supplement with a boiled egg once in a while they love it and get extra protein and fats they would not get without insects.
