Offer - How to find an escaped Lorikeet

Hope this helps someone. I used the method below to find our pet Rainbow Lorikeet after his aviary was blown off it's base in strong winds while we were out.Since our yard borders thick bush and tall trees on three sides we thought it would be impossible to find him. Our first reaction amid absolute panic was to walk in all directions calling him. Having wings only moderately clipped he was still capable of flying 20M at low altitude and having possibly 5 hours head start on us we realised it was like finding a needle in a haystack. I lost my voice completely after a short while. Darkness fell and we called it a day knowing he would have climbed a tree somewhere to roost for the night. The next morning I got up at first light (4am). Lorikeets love to call out very loud at the other birds at the first break of day. I thought this would be my best chance of finding him. Unfortunately it is also the time the trees are full of wild screeching lorikeets, but at least there isn't any people noise so you can hear things a long way off. There was no need to use my voice this time. I just took a few steps into the bush and stood still and listened long and hard. I knew wherever he was he would be hungry and crying out for breakfast so it was it was easy to discard large areas of bush where there was no bird noise. Wild Lorikeets are in groups and move on quickly. I heard a persistent single lorikeet call from one direction and made my way slowly towards it. It wasn't hard to find him several hundred metres from the house very high up in a tree, a place I wouldn't have looked.A few whistles to which he immediately answered confirmed this was the bird. As I continued talking to him and holding up my hand as though I was offering food he started making his way down. This was difficult as his claws are trimmed. He lost his footing a few times on the smooth gum tree trunk but flew back and forward between adjacent trees getting lower each time and finally he hopped onto my hand and said "Hello".

Hello,
I found a baby lorikeet with injured foot and wing on the road. He settled in well but did not want to eat mashed banana. Would not touch oatmeal baby food, grains, apple, stone fruits. The only thing he wants to eat is Weet-Bix!!! I put some hot water on a Weet-Bix and generously add honey and a little sugar and he slurps it up like a little vacuum cleaner!!! He ONLY wants to eat this sloppy food and is sooooooooo happy doing so. He has been on this diet for 10 days and is doing very well indeed.
Hope this helps someone out there!!!!
Ann.

Need - How do i find a suitable mate for my lorikeet?

Hello, recently i took my rainbow lorikeet (or olive lorikeet with colour mutation ), over to a friends house, as they just got a lorikeet, which we hoped would become friends with ours.It didnt go well, i sat mine on the cage, and they got into a fight, theres being roughly 4 months old and not of the same breed, but a lorikeet all the same, most likely a mutation of rainbow. It was started technically by my lorikeet, because the other really enjoys nibbling everything it sees, and my bird doesnt like to be nibbled on the face, so my bird tried kicking the younger bird then eventually resorted to fighting which was lots of sqwarking and beak bashing. so for the time i separated them, keeping one another almost in view of another.I am planning to find a mate for my lorikeet as i wish to start breeding them, however, this lead me to beleive that they may not all get along. How to i find out if they are right for one another?will they get along straight away? or is this normal behaviour on either part (the younger lorikeet nibbling my one all over, or my one not liking being nibbled on the beak)i have no idea what gender my one is, but i plan to find out soon.what i was hoping to do was bring my lorikeet to the breeder, let him/her play with some of the others, see which ones he/she gets along with best, then grab some feathers and run a DNA test. although i do beleive that the breederhas the birds DNA tested and seperates the genders to avoid the birds pairing, as that would cause some trauma or depression when someone removes one bird form the pair. in which case ill just get my lorikeets gender and try to pair with the opposite sex.would that work? just seeing if they immediately get along? or is fighting normal to establish dominance or something?i was just very worried because younger lorikeets like my friends have very sharp pointed beaks, and form what i saw, when the young one responded to my lorikeet trying to ward him/her off, it looked like my friends lorikeet was going for the eyes, which is not something i would risk in trying to let them fight it out.also, are there any places online to finding a way to pair lorikeets all ive seen so far are what to do with the pair, not how to establish a pair.my email is joey.richter@hotmail.com
